Gay cowboys, dim sum and cramming, oh my!

I walked into the darkened theatre flanked by one of the hottest girls in my class, Laura, and a giant bag of contraband homemade popcorn. Much like the silver screen cinemas of the past, the theatre had an "upstairs" section where Laura, the popcorn and I headed accordingly.

We were watching "Brokeback mountain" and for a movie where the protagonists are homosexuals, I was surprised at how full the Saskatoon theatre was. Maybe they were all mislead by the guys wearing cowboy hats on the poster. Boy were they in for a shock.

I came out of the theatre 2 and a half hours later fully traumatised and scarred for life. It wasn't even the image of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal "going a it" or Anne Hathaway's breasts so much as the general tone and conflict protrayed in the movie. It left me with that icky feeling I always get from reading disturbing books like "Fall on your knees" or "the Poisonwood Bible." I spend the next 24 hours in this transfixed state where I keep trying to suppress my mind from replaying the disturbing scenes over and over again.

This morning, I was much less traumatised and treated myself to a breakfast of super-healthy organic granola and a banana. THen I decided to have a tim tam. AFterall, today was the day that I had to cram like a mad woman for my General Medicine exam which is first thing tomorrow morning at the ungodly hour of 8am.

Last night, not feeling the full pressures of the exam, I'd only gotten through less than half my notes before buggerring off to the movie.

I studied hardcore for most of the morning then I got a call to go out for dim sum with some other kids from the vet college. What I was thinking eating dim sum in a place like Saskatoon, I don't know. To be fair, the girl that called me is the scary goth girl in my class who, legend has it, has no less than NINETEEN PIERCINGS. She is not someone I like to no to. I think it's cus I have a morbid fear she'll take her silver studded black leather choker and take out my eye with it.

Despite appearances, she is a very nice girl but I still don't want to take my chances with that choker. NINETEEN PIERCINGS! MY GOSH! How many orifices does a human body have?!

I walked into the dim sum place and looked around. It was the most orientals I'd ever seen in one place in Saskatoon. That meant that in spite of the fact that the restaurant was full, there was still only about 40 Asians in there.

"I don't feel so alone anymore!" I joked.

Goth girl and the other vet kids didn't get it. I coughed and carried on like I had choked on my tea and mumbled.

I hate to be a dim sum snob but the food was barely passable. My "sui mai" fell apart on me before it left the little bamboo dish and the shrimp dumplings did the same. Since most of the people there were in vet school and half of them were on the animal welfare club exec and were vegetarians, I was limited as to what dishes I could order. I looked longingly at the beef omasum as the dim sum girl drove her cart away.

I sighed.

But at least I could bask in the ambiance of being in a dim sum place again. It's amazing how much you miss something once it's gone. I used to hate dim sum with a fiery passion and now, I'm happy just to get a sniff of poorly made sesame lotus paste balls.

It wasn't till about 2 hours later that I changed my mind again.

I was busy cramming General Medicine again and I was studying the "Diarrhea" handout about all the different types of GI upsets animals get and why. Suddenly, my tummy began rumbling. "Oh no. This can't be happening."

An hour later, I emerged from the bathroom and returned to my diarrhea notes. The irony was not lost on me.

I finished the hand out and moved onto "Gastric ulcerations and colic."

Suddenly, I got a serious case of heartburn. "This is not happening. This is not happening."

Two shots of pepto bismol and a couple of zantacs later, I was still suffering. I finished the hand out and dreaded what was up next.

"Diseases of the mouth".

I thought it time to get some food again and opted for another banana. It was as I was nearing the end that I bit my lip.

"OK. THAT'S IT!"

I calmed myself down and glanced at my remaining hand outs. Neurology. Shock and massive hemorrhage. Hyper- and hypo-thermia.

I wasn't quite up to facing neurology and shock and massive hemorrhage yet.

I put on a thick sweater and started on the Hypothermia handout.

It's almost 9pm now and I'm just finishing off the neurology hand out. Nothing's happened as of yet . . . but that could be cus I'm always neurotic.

I am panicking about my exam though and the more I blog, the more nervous I'm getting.

Perhaps it's getting to me afterall.

Better get back to the books. Here's hoping I don't fail and go into shock.
