"Marie Antoinette, will you go to the prom with me?"
The big steel doors of the anatomy lab swung open and Vivian braced herself for what horrors lay in the big tupperware tubs on the floor.
A faint acidic odor floated up from the tubs which faintly reminded her of raw meat and sour olives. She sauntered over to her table where her partner was busy leaning over a big pink gob the size of a water melon. "What's on for today?" asked Vivian. Her partner looked up and showed her the object.
It was a fetus. A cow fetus to be exact.
Vivian snapped on a glove and touched the think, veinous, clear pink fetus. It was cold and slightly . . . sticky. Yup. Sticky. The arms and legs were all folded inwards in a typical fetal fashion and the eyes could be seen as black orbs under the nearly clear jelloid pink eyelids. The tongue was almost fully developed and was sticking out the side of the mouth, giving the fetus a morbidly comical appearance.
Vivian put her hand on the head of the fetus to turn it around so she could access it with her scalpel. As she moved her hand off the head, the ears stuck to her gloves and she nearly ripped them off. She took a breath, nodded at her partner and began to slice open the abdomen. Pink fluid leaked out over the table and the fetus began slipping around. "Quick! Grab some paper towels!"
The fetus was lain on some paper towels and the dissection resumed. And all the while, Vivian had an image from "Clone High" of a horse fetus popping up and asking Mari Antoinette to a prom (one of the last episodes). She giggled at the image in her head, then sobered up as she removed the little heart from the fetus. Next, she removed the lungs and rumen or cow stomachs. It was a nasty job and all the while, the fetus still threatened to slip off the table.
After the lab, Vivian headed to a lunch time seminar. They were offering donuts and coffee. She was famished. Anatomy lab always did that to her for some odd reason. She eagerly searched around for the powdered jelly filled donuts. They were her favorite. She bit into the delectable pastry and the clearish pink goo oozed out. She put down the donut and sighed.
For some reason, it just wasn't as appetizing today . . .
