Where's my remote control?

I remember during the last 6 months of my internship, I started having fantasies. Mostly, these fantasies involved lounging around in my pajamas in a room full of sunshine with a giant pile of books and a glass of wine beside me. The books would be a mix of classic literature, humour, thrillers, sci-fi, mysteries, and basically anything that did not in any way, shape or form resemble a veterinary journal or textbook.

I did get to read a lot of books this summer but not half as many as I'd hoped. For one thing, I realized that without a permanent address with which to get a library card and with barely any money in my bank account, my access to books was a bit limited. I spent half my summer drooling over the new Amazon kindle only to discover that it has limited use in Canada (boooo!) and that it was waaay out of my budget range.

In the end, I had to content myself with the copy of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" which Gabe so thoughtfully purchased for me, but after the third read, that kind of lost its brain-eating, ninja-beating, corset-wearing charm.

And then I got thinking. Why on earth would I waste precious hours of my time off trying to read and use my imagination when there's something infinitely more entertaining and much easier to enjoy?

And thus, I discovered the magic of television.

In my four months, I managed to watch both seasons of:
'True Blood' (Sookeh . . .)
,
'Spaced' (old British comedy series featuring Simon Pegg),

'Green Wing' (quirky British medical comedy),

started watching 'Bones',

'Glee' (OMG OMG OMG!)

and fell in love with the old cult classic 'Firefly'.

Naturally, amongst all this, I managed to make good use of my complete 9 season X-files box-set.

(*insert girly 'i heart special agent fox mulder' sigh*)

And I found the time to watch "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog" about twenty times. If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend it- especially to all those aspiring super villains out there. And I know you are out there.

It's a musical comedy featuring Neil Patrick Harris in the title role as an aspiring super villain. To become a bona fide super villain though, he has to do something truly heinous to get the attention of the elite 'Evil League of Evil'. His evil attempts are foibled, however, by his macho self-absorbed nemesis, Captain Hammer, played by Nathan Fillion. Captain Hammer also interferes with Dr. Horrible's plans to win the heart of his crush at the laundromat, Penny. Much singing and madness ensues and to find out what happens . . . I guess you'll just have to watch it, won't you?

And with that, I am signing off. Got lots of important stuff to watch . . . DO, I meant do. Did I just say watch? I meant lots of important stuff to do. Yep.

That's a lot of tele...
You could purchase used books, they are dramatically less expensive than brand new books. For the most part, I get my books through other people. There is always someone who has read a book that they would love to pass off to someone else to read. It's easy, you just start talking about books that you have read, ask them about what books they have read, then say how you would like to read more, but you just don't have the funds to read everything that you want to. Nine times out of nine and a half they say, well I could lend you "insert book title". Often you don't even have to say that you can't afford all the books that you want to read, often they just offer the book up before you even get to that part. One time, I was in a book store and I asked if they had any Nathaniel Hawthorne. They didn't have any such books, but the staff member that I asked about the author told me to come back the next day and they would give me their favorite Nathaniel Hawthorne book. I wasn't sure if she was going to try and rape me or anything, but luckily she didn't try to rape me.

Reading what other people fancied is also helpful in that they have provided you with what should be a good book. Myself, I have found that what people pass off to me is not always a good read, but it forces me to read things that I wouldn't necessarily read.
