Free as a bird

Saskatoon is mostly a student town. Someone once quoted to me that 25% of the population are students or affiliated with the university in some way.

It's the end of April now, exams are finished, and everywhere, that lovely 'zip' and 'smack' of packing tape can be heard. Dumpsters have been filled with junk; dumpsters have been emptied of junk. Boxes have been filled, emptied, flattened, filled and re-flattened yet again.

This year, I've joined in with the throng and bit by bit what has been my home for the last year is being torn down and packed away in neat little cardboard boxes. It's heartbreaking really. My landlord has been bringing around prospective tenants and I've been getting all territorial and defensive if they sneer at the place. It's a dump, but it was MY DUMP!

Next year, I'll be living in a basement suite with my classmate and her husband. They're renovating the basement this summer and by the fall, they promise me a room painted with butter-yellow walls, nice new hardwood floors, my own bathroom and in suite laundry. What more can a girl ask for!

I'll be sharing the basement with their geriatric blind/deaf cat, "Pussywillow" (so called because she's entirely white except a little grey patch on her forehead that looks like, well, a pussywillow). Pussywillow's litterbox is at the foot of the stairs but I suppose I don't mind sharing my space.

Besides, if it came down to it, I'm pretty sure I could take on a blind/deaf eighteen year old cat that's in renal failure.

Everyone at school is pressuring me to take on an additional cat. I made the comment once to someone in my class that I only take on animals if they're super old and debilitated. That's because I'm a commitment phobe and I want something that is guaranteed to kack in two years (Ranger- case in point).

Unfortunately, I guess my comment got around and next thing I knew, everyone's been telling me to adopt this poor cat from the school. The current blood-donor cat at the teaching hospital, "Sammy", is retiring this year. He's apparently an affectionate, neutered, MATURE cat who desperately needs a home. I was going to take him before I decided I was going to move.

People have already come up with this elaborate way I could sneak Sammy into my basement suite next year and hide him from the other cat. It involves a lot of barricades and a bit of creative furniture arrangment.

Vet students. I tell ya.

Anyhow, I am off to get ready for a night on the town. I wrote my last exam this morning (SCORE!) and everyone in my class is out partying tonight. The plan is to glam it up and try to look half decent for once. That should take me a good long hour so I guess I'd better go!

I've gotten two of my marks back so far and I've done OK (not super stellar, but stellar considering I studied only a day for each exam, thank you very much!).

Ok! I'm off.

Oh wait, before I go, I have to berrate (jokingly) Ngoc Anh for making me download that Keith Urban song "Tonight I wanna cry"! You have no idea how depressing that song is when you live alone in a crumby apartment, miles from your fiance, and are hanging onto your sanity by a thread. Sniffles. Damn his sexy voice and damn country songs (but it's the only country music I've heard in Saskatoon that I'll actually tolerate)!!!!! HAve you heard "I wanna love somebody like you" by him yet? They play that EVERYWHERE in Saskatoon.

As for what else I'm listening to these days, I'd highly recommend anything by Ima Robot, Belle and Sebastian's "Step into my office", Nellie McKay's "David" and "The Dog song", anything off the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack, especially "Feel so free" by Ivy, "Catch my disease" by Ben Lee, and "Somewhere only we know" by Keane.

Joanne, you are forbidden from getting any of the songs above (except "David") as I am burning a mix CD for you and you will just ruin it all for yourself. RUIN IT!

Alright. Signing off. Wish me luck with making myself look presentable.

PS: Went to study in the library yesterday and sat down at the table, thought someone was eating 'Salt and vinegar' chips, and looked around desperately for who would eat such pungent food in the library. No one was around except smelly kid. And he didn't have any chips. His shoes were off.

Sigh, smells a bit, but he's got a heart of gold.

PPS: THREE DAYS TILL INDIA! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! What words does Jason know anyhow? I only know that I'm not supposed to shake people's left hand or show too much skin or I'll be swarmed by men (yeah, like that's ever gonna happen what with my post-exam skin and blubber! but just in case, I think I'll only pack long sleeves and pants). And if you don't know why I'm not supposed to shake people's left hand, you don't want to know.

Long pants and long sleeved shirts? Are you crazy? You're going in May! That's the hottest month of the year! It'll be like 40 degrees or more, trust me I've been there in May. Take some shorts and short sleeves - just don't wear anything too hooch like a tube top, especially if you're in rural India. The cities, you'll be okay.
